I am supported through a grant. Am I covered by the French national health insurance system (Sécurité Sociale) or do I need to subscribe to buy a private health insurance ?
Health coverage through the French social security system does not depend on the type of financial support you have for doing your research in France, but on your status. If you are staying in France on a student visa and are not yet 28 years old, you will be affiliated with the student health insurance system (sécurité sociale étudiante), for a global annual fee of 155 €. If you are over 28 years old, you can become affiliated with the national health insurance system (sécurité sociale) through its basic universal health insurance coverage " Couverture Maladie Universelle (CMU) ", effective immediately (the normal delay period would have been 3 months). The CMU basic insurance is free if your annual income is less than 6721 € . Beyond that amount, you must pay for the CMU. This insurance is also offered to foreigners with a " scientific " status, if they can demonstrate lawful and stable residence on the French territory for over 3 months. Important : Some grants (such as those from the EGIDE) give the holder the right to be covered by the French social security.
