I am salaried. Am I covered by the French national health insurance system (Sécurité Sociale) or do I need to subscribe to a private insurance ?

Yes, the Social Security covers all salaried employees retroactively from their 1st day of employment. Payments are automatically withdrawn from your salary every month, and it is useless to subscribe to a health insurance. However you are required to contact your local Social Security Office (Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie).
