Any resident or his/her family and dependents who do not benefit from another source of health coverage (private insurance, or from their country of previous residence) while in France can be covered by the basic universal health insurance (" Couverture Maladie Universelle " or CMU ). Persons applying must have been in France for at least 3 months without interruption and have obtained a residency permit (or a notice of request for a residency permit (" Récépissé de demande de carte de séjour "). This condition still excludes persons who are not salaried in France or holders of a visa for a short stay. The researcher will be affiliated and covered starting from the 1st day of the 4th month of his/her stay in France as well as his/her family members if they can demonstrate that they have been in France for 3 months. For a stay of less than 3 months, we recommend you subscribe to a private insurance.
The CMU basic insurance is free if your taxable income for the year preceeding your move to France was less than 6721 €. Beyond this amount, you will have to pay a contribution equivalent to 8% of the taxable income of your household for the previous year minus 6721 €.
(For  example : if the household income you declared was 24 000 € in 2003, your contribution will be : 24 000 – 6721 = 17 279. Hence, a contribution of 8% of 17 391 = 1382.32 € to cover yourself and your family members as well as dependents for a one year coverage to the social security).
