Civil liability is defined as the obligation under which a person must compensate or repair damages caused to another person. (For example, through negligence). Liability insurance is mandatory in France. It is independent of the work insurance that covers accidents at the work site. Personal liability insurance may be bought from any private insurance company.

Personal liability covers damages to a third party :
- that are caused by you, whether by imprudence or negligence,
- that are committed by your children, if they live under your roof (adult children are also covered, see your contract),
 - that are caused by any member of your family living under your roof or employee (cleaner, gardener, baby-sitter...),
- caused by your animals, or animals you may be looking after for someone else,
- caused by objects in your possession, or that you have borrowed or rented.
- linked to your housing property (for example, through a lack of maintenance or a construction defect, even if the property is not occupied or rented).

Personal liability does not cover :
- harm you cause to yourself or your family.
- harm you intentionally cause to someone else,
- accidents your employees may have while working for you (those come under the " accident on the job site " clause of your health insurance),
- your professional activity (specific insurance).

You are already covered for personal liability if :
- you have purchased an all-inclusive house insurance which also includes personal liability coverage for yourself and your family (" Multirisque habitation "),

To insure yourself if you are not already covered :
You must buy an insurance contract that includes liability for yourself (" Responsabilité civile du particulier ") or for yourself and family (" Responsabilité civile familiale ") from an insurance company.
