FAQ

Am I allowed to drive in France with a foreign driving licence ?
Publié le 20/12/2004

Nationals of the European Union may drive in France with the driver's licence issued by their own country.

The same is true for all other countries, as long as the duration does not exceed 1 year. Before the one-year deadline, you must request that your driver's licence be exchanged for a French driver's licence. This request is made at the prefecture. To benefit from this procedure, a reciprocity agreement must exist between the country that issued your driver's licence and France. If this is not the case, after your first year in France, you must take a French driving test.
If you have forgotten to exchange your driver's licence during your first year in France, you must also take the French driving test.
