We thought it important to negotiate a policy that was valid from all of France and that would offer the usual coverage necessary to guest researchers.
After some research, we have chosen a contract with the firm ABC ASSURANCES and the AXA-Assurances group. We think this is the best adapted offer in terms of coverage and rates. The initial offer has been improved to better meet the researchers’ needs. Starting in 2009, new coverage plans are available. You may subscribe separately to each of them:
- medical expenses for non-salaried workers and their families
- supplemental health coverage
- disability and death insurance
- comprehensive home insurance including personal liability
- separate personal liability insurance if a comprehensive insurance is not subscribed to specific assistance
- school and extracurricular insurance
This offer is available to foreign researchers, including thesis students, and their families. The number of the Guest Researcher Card will be requested when subscribing.
Important:
- the health insurance may be bought for a duration of 1 to 12 months on a renewable basis
- the other policies are for one year and are renewable.
Make sure you get your policy renewed if your stay in France extends beyond its validity. The renewal of the policies is not automatic. All the members of a family must subscribe to the same coverage (except for the disability and death insurance). If you are interested, you may subscribe to an AXA policy online (description of coverage, subscription form), or contact ABC Assurances directly if you have any questions at the following number : +33 (0)3 81 84 22 22 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for an English or French speaking person. All other days, call +33 (0)3 81 84 08 97. The insurance company may also be contacted by e-mail. 1- Basic health insurance
For those who are not covered by the French national social security system, they may subscribe to this policy for 1 month to 1 year on a renewable basis. The policy offers excellent reimbursement for health expenses (medical costs, pharmacy, hospital, etc.). The rate of reimbursement will depend on the plan subscribed. You can download the general conditions (only in French), see pdf by clicking on "subscribe to an AXA policy". Attention : the new ANAEM taxes to be paid by the researcher or the hosting institution are not reimbursed by us.
Two plans are offered:
- Plan 1: garantie « formule 1 »
- Plan 2: garantie « Santé + ». This plan offers a higher rate of reimbursement but has a 1 year minimum enrollment.
The policy does not cover infertility diagnosis and treatment, assisted reproductive techniques, plastic and cosmetic surgery, injuries from attempted suicide, etc., as well as other exclusions stipulated by the French Insurance Law. Childbirth costs are not reimbursed by Plan 1, however pregnancy costs are. With Plan 2, expenses associated with pregnancy and childbirth are reimbursed (there is a 10 months' waiting period for childbirth costs).
Examples of rates, for 1 year:
Plan 1
0 to 35 year: 717 euros
36 to 39 year: 923 euros
etc.
Plan 2
0 to 35 year: 1008 euros
36 to 39 year: 1298 euros
etc.
Subscription to Plan 2 is for one year minimum.

Important: Independent of your health cover (public or private), the rates charged by French doctors vary considerably and are reimbursed differently according to whether the doctor has signed an agreement with the national health insurance system and whether the negotiated rates are applied strictly or not. We recommend that you consult our guide on health insurance to help you choose an insurance policy or to contact us to avoid any bad surprises. 2- Supplementary insurance
This voluntary insurance is available to salaried researchers registered with the French social security system and insured by the national health insurance system. It covers the fraction of the expenses not reimbursed by the social security scheme. Two plans are offered:
- Basic plan: For a researcher without dependents, who is not yet 44 at the moment of registration with the national health insurance, the rate is 325,93 euros. For the more expensive plan, the rate is 583,24 euros.
- Researchers subscribing to the ABC Assurances local plan pay 171,54 euros (if under 44 and alone). For the more expensive plan, the rate is 325,93 euros.
Both plans have a minimum term of one-year. Ask for the rates directly from ABC Assurances. Dependents may also be covered. 3- Death and disability insurance
This insurance covers death, accident and permanent disability. Only the researcher may subscribe to it. Flat rates (yearly basis), renewable:
- option 1: 22 euros
- option 2: 44 euros
- option 3: 88 euros
The rates above are for a person under 40. The rate depends on age.

This insurance covers your accommodation. When you sign a rental agreement, you are requested to take an insurance against fire, water damage, theft etc. Usually, the comprehensive home insurance also includes personal liability.
Flat rates (yearly basis), renewable:
- up to 3 main rooms (including verandahs but excluding kitchen, hallways, lavatories and corridors): the yearly rate is 75 euros
- 4 main rooms and more: 112 euros/year

Personal liability insurance covers claims arising from incidents of daily life.
Flat rate (yearly basis), renewable: 16 euros per person..

6- Assistance
It is a personal assistance service offered to foreigners living in France.
The annual rate is 15.40 euros per person.
7- School and extracurricular insurance
This insurance covers your child in the event of an accident at school or during extracurricular activities. It is available to FnAK members who subscribe to the comprehensive home insurance negotiated with ABC Assurances.

Flat rate (per academic year and for the duration of the scientific stay only): 18.20 euros.
